This is the story of Futago Textile,
a two-ply woven fabric that is one of the many cultural products born in Warabi City, Saitama,
a lively and vibrant post town on the Nakasendo Road.
The town’s wildly popular woven goods concealed the secret of textiles with a high quality that was thought to be impossible to achieve.
We take pride in the traditions of Warabi and our sustainable use of cotton that makes a connection to the future.
Tracing threads of memory, bringing new life to materials.
Our goal is to deliver better textiles to the world.
Futago-ori “twin weave” two-ply woven fabric is a cotton textile made with pre-dyed yarn.
Smooth, premium-grade 100% cotton woven fabric from Warabi, Japan
Outstanding silky luster: the more it’s washed, the more softly it caresses the skin
Ultra-high density, offering miraculous heat retention, breathability, and wind-proofing
Solid, substantial cotton with high opacity
Pre-dyed yarn fabric is made by dyeing the yarn beforehand, combining different colors of yarn to create a pattern, and finally finishing it as a single piece of fabric. It has the advantage of being able to produce deep, rich colors, since the thread is thoroughly dyed all the way to its center, and because the color does not easily fade, color transfer is minimal no matter how many times it is washed.
This is a process used by some of the world’s best-known leading brands, and is characterized by a luxurious finish. Also, fabric made with pre-dyed yarn is firm and resilient, retaining its silhouette and strength. With many silhouettes that do not cling to the body, it is comfortable and suitable for autumn and winter products.
The warp and weft of Futago-ori two-ply woven fabric are colored with the technique of “cheese dyeing,” which results in high quality with few knots and minimal fluff.
Futago-ori two-ply woven fabric is a high-density cotton fabric with the tightest possible weave of ultra-fine cotton thread, raising the thread count beyond conventional limits.
High density, fully opaque
Warp thread count of 68 to 72 per cm
Futago-ori two-ply woven fabric has a tight weave, giving it a delicate grain and firmness, so the longer it is used, the softer the texture becomes.
The fabric has the advantage of repelling water, so it does not get wet easily and dries quickly. Because fabric is easily damaged when it gets wet, the water-repellent effect makes for ease of maintenance.
The higher the thread count, the fewer entrances and exits there are for air. Especially when used for winter outerwear, high-density fabrics have a heat-retaining effect because they prevent cold air from entering, and prevent air warmed by body heat from escaping to the outside.
At the end of the Edo period (around 1853 to 1868), Futago-ori two-ply woven fabric emerged as the ultimate in high-quality cotton textiles.
However, its production dwindled as industrialization advanced, and for a time it disappeared altogether.
We have traced the history of Futago-ori two-ply woven fabric, which was said to be unrecoverable, and have revived it in the current era.
The Futago Textile brand has been created to suit affluent modern lifestyles,
without altering the original quality and design standards of Futago-ori two-ply woven fabric.
With this, we have turned a new page in the history of fabrics.
